Fantastic displays,Great day out but as millions has been spent on it’s refurb the new lift system is disappointing especially going in through new entrance, as the lifts are slow and too small for the high number of parents with children in buggies I really liked the animal exhibit where they were all hung from the ceiling. I think you could spend a whole day there and not see everything. Just newly done up. Fabulous place to visit – and it’s free. In Edinburgh that is unusual.

The Museum was fantastic, well organised in different sections, we only regret not allocating more time to spend at the museum. The Egypt exhabition is amazing, and the science and technology sections had us fascinated for hours. Brilliant for people with children – so much hands on and special areas of activities. Free admission but not for the feature exhibition – Egyptians at the mo.

Aged 14 — 26, these young people come from a variety of areas and backgrounds but they all have one thing in common… they all love the museum and they want to help other young people discover the amazing things it has to offer. Sixteen young people came together during the summer for the first Young Demonstrators training courses, where they got to know the museum and each other before creating their own mini-tours.

Working solo or in groups, the new Young Demonstrators rose to the challenge, choosing objects, researching them and rehearsing before delivering their tours on the final day of training. A round of speed dating helped the groups to get to know each other — although not in the romantic sense.

I had the delight of being invited to a masked ball at this location, it is a beautiful location, the service was excellent, the only fly in the ointment was that they offered tap water or alcohol, I like sparkling water and they would not provide any,I was even asked if I had specially asked prior to the ball which I felt was unnecessary, it was a let down on an otherwise perfect evening. The museum itself is a grand place and well worth a visit. A great way to pass the day for all generations.

Something to see for all ages and Free. Loved the gallery viewing areas and the roof views are amazing. Excellent variety of exhibits and shop was good too not all for children. Cafe facilities were alright but selection of home made cakes and soups would have helped. Also waitress was a bit lacking in social skills.

In recent times the National Museum of Scotland’s bespoke exhibitions have done a good job of merging adult interest, children’s amusement and wide-reaching educational value, whether their subjects have been primates or the history of Scottish pop music. For this touring show by the Australian Museum, however — which is making its only UK stop here — the main focus is firmly upon the sort of Jurassic thrills which will have kids gasping in the greatest amazement, and which are bound to make it a guaranteed hit.

Not that everyone can’t love dinosaurs, of course, but there’s something about monstrous lizards which plays most evocatively upon fertile young imaginations. The most attention-grabbing single piece in this exhibition is the cast skeleton of Scotty the Tyrannosaurus Rex, one of the largest complete T-Rex skeletons ever found, towering above those of his near and distant cousins like Lythronax Argestes, Daspletosaurus Torosus, the feathered Velociraptor Mongoliensis, and the common chicken.

The point the exhibition makes in this regard is that Tyrannosaurs weren’t just a single type of Spielberg-friendly creature which existed at a fixed point in time, but that the family which goes by that name were in existence for nearly million years, between and 66 million years ago, and that they went through a range of iterations and evolutions in this time. Alongside the fully-reconstructed cast skeletons and in-depth interpretation boards, there are plenty of elements to the show which will keep younger and older dinosaur hunters happy.

There are interactive displays which invite players to hatch their own dinosaurs and guess the breed or cause their own extinction-level event; an atmospheric video corridor which imagines dinosaurs roaming the streets of Edinburgh; and film which details the work of palaeontologists. Yet it’s the evocation of the sheer weight of time these creatures walked the earth that even more imaginative and inquisitive viewers might struggle to comprehend.

National Museum of Scotland’s latest exhibition brings to life our Jurassic forebears 30 Jan Tyrannosaurs features AR experiences, extremely rare fossil specimens, life-size casts and more. Wild and Majestic: Romantic Visions of Scotland 9 Jul Ambitious and important show tells the story of how the brand of Scotland came to be.
